The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about India and the promotion of intellectual engagement with India in American colleges and universities.MissionAIIS serves both the academy and the public, promoting in-depth understanding of India through language training programs, research and performing arts fellowships, and two world-class cultural archives.DescriptionFor over 50 years, the American Institute of Indian Studies has shaped American knowledge of India. AIIS provides funding to pre- and post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates and artists in pursuit of knowledge about India.AIIS extends knowledge of Indian culture through its two research centers: the Center for Art & Archaeology, which is devoted to documenting India’s rich visual traditions and the Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology, which houses extensive collections of recordings of Indian music and oral traditions.In addition, AIIS offers intensive, immersion-based training in nearly 20 modern and classical South Asian languages at multiple sites in India. AIIS also supports book publications and articles about India.AIIS is headquartered at the University of Chicago in the United States, and in India at Gurgaon, with an office and guesthouse at Defence Colony in New Delhi. There are regional offices in Kolkata (Calcutta) and Pune.
