Mutual Rescue, a national initiative of Humane Society Silicon Valley, aims to change the conversation from "people or animals" to "people and animals." Mutual Rescue's purpose is to challenge a commonly held misconception about animal-welfare philanthropy—that gifts to animal shelters and rescue organizations reduce charitable giving to organizations benefiting people, and that the two causes are somehow mutually exclusive. Through sharing inspiring true stories across all media platforms, Mutual Rescue presents compelling evidence that when people adopt animals, their own lives are often dramatically transformed in positive ways as well. Our Doggy Day Out program, which helps shelters across the country start day foster programs, helps people find new ways to engage with the shelters in their own communities and benefit from time spent with a pet even if they can't own one.
