College/University

BGU offers undergraduate, postgraduate and work-based foundation degree courses, with an emphasis on enriching the lives of its students, staff and the community it serves. BGU began life in 1862 as an Anglican teacher training college for women. In 1962 it was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College in honour of Robert Grosseteste, the thirteenth century scientist, philosopher, educator, and Bishop of Lincoln. In 2012, following a successful application for taught degree awarding powers we became an official University, Bishop Grosseteste University. The past few years have seen a considerable growth in student numbers, with just over 2,100 students studying here. We have a strong background in teaching but are currently developing our many other courses and launching brand new for 2015/16 degrees including Counselling, Sociology and Health and Social Care, as well as extending our range of Master's and Foundation Degrees. The University still occupies its single site in uphill Lincoln and although the original Victorian buildings are still in daily use, they have been extensively renovated and refurbished. Today the attractive I8-acre campus houses many modern developments, including purpose-built learning and teaching accommodation in the Robert Hardy Building, as well as dedicated facilities for Drama, Humanities and Social Sciences, and History. Across campus, there have been many other developments taking place, such as the expansion and modernisation of the Cornerstone Library, the addition of two unique eateries each serving a range of drinks and snacks throughout the day and a newly built en-suite residence block, Wickham Hall. Along with the recent improvements at BGU, there are plenty more developments in the pipeline for the next few years such as, increasing our course portfolio further and renovating the kitchen and dining spaces in Constance Stewart Hall into multifunctioning teaching spaces.
