Project Access Hong Kong ("PAHK") is part of an international non-profit initiative launched by a group of Oxford students with the aim of battling inequality in higher education, especially in Oxford and Cambridge. We recognize that there are cultural, informational and financial barriers that prevent deserving talented Hong Kong students from successfully gaining admission to top-tier universities. Our aim is to mitigate these socioeconomic factors and to ensure that local students from Hong Kong can realize their full intellectual potential in world-class institutions. Our main effort is directed at helping academically ambitious, but economically underprivileged, students gain admissions to Oxford and Cambridge. With this mission in mind, we adopt a multifaceted approach to reach out to local students: from organizing open days with Oxbridge students ad tutors to nurture aspirations for younger students in F.3-5, to organizing academic and all-rounded workshops with our partner universities in Hong Kong. We particularly pride ourselves on our comprehensive program that supports students when they decide to apply to Oxbridge – a year-long scheme that provides guidance for our mentees for everything from the personal statement to the admissions interview.We have over 120 current Oxbridge students volunteering as mentors to provide 1:1 tutorials for our university admissions programme, which enables us to tailor our pedagogical approaches to fit each individual student. The effects of this student-centric approach are readily apparent: 71% of PAHK mentees receive an interview invitation to the universities, and 24% are successfully accepted – 3 times higher than the average for local Hong Kong students.
