AmeriCorps and Jesuit Volunteer Corps Member at Community Center at Visitation - Philadelphia, PA, US
Our Center is located in the Kensington District of Philadelphia where we service the poorest District in all of Pennsylvania and the District is one of the 10 poorest and the 2nd hungriest District in all of America. The Center has the only full-size gymnasium in the community which is utilized for everything from weddings to basketball tournaments. Our Center provides services for over 30,000 constituents each year and we feed over 6,000 families as we try to meet the needs of the community at large. 80% of our constituents live below the poverty line, hence our goal is to empower the community through education, sports and recreational activities. We aim to be a "Beacon of Hope" in one of the most undeserved communities in America as we strive to improve adult literacy and keep children off the dangerous Kensington streets. Our programs include: Adult Education, Youth Sports (basketball, soccer and after school programs), Senior programs, community Outreach (festivals, movie nights, monthly FREE dinners, Job training, ESL classes, a food pantry which gives FREE food and much, much more.
