It was 1981 when the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with the at the time abandoned Brancaia wine estate in Castellina in Chianti and purchased it. In 1986 Brancaia made the first rank in an important blind Chianti Classico tasting organised by the Swiss wine magazine Vinum and, after that, rapidly gained international recognition. This lead to the purchasing of a second estate in Radda in Chianti in 1989, followed by a third one in the Maremma region, only 10km from the Mediterranean coastline, in 1998.Today BRANCAIA is one of Tuscany's leading wineries, receiving important national and international awards every year. The day-to-day business of Brancaia has long been in the hands of the second generation: Barbara, who studied oenology, has been running the winery since the late 1990s, Michael supports her in financial and legal questions and Andi helps her with communication and digital strategy.
