When you decide to begin karate, you are deciding to begin a personal journey where you grow not only in your knowledge of karate, but in your knowledge of yourself. By pushing yourself to new limits and training yourself to do new things, you will grow both physically and mentally in this martial art.Our style of karate - Shorin Ryu - is a classical Okinawan karate style that is known for its speed and power. 'Classical' means that, while we do participate in some tournaments, competition is not our main focus. Instead, our main focus is on personal development, realistic self-defence techniques, and the preservation of our martial art for future generations. Our dojo is a part of the Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu association, headed by Hanshi Gary Legacy, with schools all over Southwestern Ontario and in British Columbia. Our dojo's chief instructor, Daniel Whittal, has over 20 years of experience in karate. He currently holds the rank of yondan (4th degree black belt), and has taught karate for over a decade. Our general classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:45pm at the gymnasium of Sprucedale United Church, 493 Victoria Avenue, Chatham, Ontario. Students 8 years of age and older are welcome to join our dojo.
