WaiHome has recently been awarded a Small Business Innovation and Research Grant from the National Science Foundation to investigate the use of algal photobioreactors for passive onsite wastewater treatment and reuse. In Hawaii, there are currently an estimated 88,000 cesspools still in operation today. This stockpile of outdated systems is polluting the groundwater and contributing to the degradation of coastal ecosystems. The State of Hawaii has banned their use beyond 2050. Unfortunately, the average cost of an upgrade to the current onsite treatment standard - a septic tank with leachfield - will cost an average of $23,000. A cost that over 90% of Hawaiian homeowners cannot afford. Beyond that, septic tanks have a well documented history of failure in Hawaii where high groundwater levels, steep slopes, and small lot sizes limit system effectiveness. WaiHome is working hard to address this issue with smart, simple, and cost efficient wastewater treatment solutions.
