The Field Academy is an organization that partners with students, teachers, schools, and communities across the United States to create immersive, community-driven, place-based educational experiences for young people. We believe that a classroom can be anywhere: the middle of a field, the top of a mountain, the living room of someone's home, or the intersection of two city streets. We offer four programs that integrate experiential learning into academic experience: On our Student Expeditions, a group of students from across the United States investigate a contemporary critical issue in a region of the United States while studying the history, ecology, and culture of that place. In previous summers we've studied water issues in the Southwest, mining issues in Central Appalachia, and differing definitions of home and community in New England. Our Student Retreats offer past and present Field Academy student participants the opportunity to reconnect with the Field Academy community and strengthen their commitment to their own education back at home. Our Educator Retreats provide an intensive multi-day experience for educators to work with Field Academy faculty and students and immerse themselves in the practice of creating place-based and community-driven education. Through our Partnerships, we support other educators, schools, and organizations to integrate place-based, community-driven learning into their own educational settings. We offer workshops in curriculum design, coaching for individuals and teaching teams, and facilitation support for individuals and teams creating new schools and crafting new programs.
