Since 2013, Heidi Weitjens has dreamt of handcrafting spirits inspired by botanicals found on King Island. The journey commenced the deep-dive into planning the business, in May 2013 Heidi was advised one of the first steps to take towards this goal was by securing a domain name accessible to the world www.kingislanddistillery.com Followed by creating a Facebook business page, purchasing equipment and securing all of the necessary permits and approvals under the company name of King Island Distillery Pty Ltd, which Ms Weitjens registered in October 2014. The Distillery took six years to design and develop.Researching and learning is always ongoing, Heidi feels fortunate being Mentored by some of the best ambassadors, operators and distillers in the Tasmanian Industry, whilst searching for the most authentic flavours to represent King Island in a bottle. A Silver Medal at the 2020 Australian Gin Awards for the ever commercial batch of Native Gin would suggest Heidi is onto a winning recipe. Heidi Weitjens is a proud artisanal distiller of Spirits, using the finest ingredients to make award winning products right here on King Island. With smiles all round and every approval in place, Heidi is very excited about her Independent Local King Island Distillery business.Since Bill Lark introduced Heidi to an Industry with such a positive Spirit, Heidi decided that it was time to start making a dream come true. When Heidi began investigating the Industry, there were only 9 Distillery establishments, now there are 70+ in Tasmania. Despite investment many offers, Heidi has been very determined to plug away at her own pace and refused to give up on her Project. Finding ways to make things work, Heidi has chosen to be self sufficient and has built a manufacturing operation on a shoestring budget, set up in the heart of her Island home.It is a real advantage growing up as a King Islander.
