Asociatia Telefonul Copilului is a not-for-profit charity organization, operating the Romanian child helpline, the country's first aid line dedicated to offering professional counseling to children.The helpline, available at 116 111, is a tool of social value, supporting children in need of care and protection and linking them to services and resources. It provides the callers with an opportunity to express their concerns, talk about issues they are directly affected by, and provides them with emergency contacts. It is the only service of its kind in Romania.The line is available to children 7 days a week, providing children, parents, and other relevant parties with psychological counseling and information on any child protection-related issues, legal advice, referrals, and case monitoring. The professionals providing advice and counseling are exclusively social workers and psychologists.The children who turn to 116 111 for help point out personal problems related to their families, or to loneliness, sadness, isolation, discrimination, inadequate behavior of teachers or schoolmates or, in the most severe cases, physical and sexual abuses, followed by suicide attempts and/or self-harm. The need for the child helpline is confirmed by the enormous number of callers. Some 2.5 million calls were answered to date and, in more than 82.000 cases, children's lives were in danger and the immediate intervention of relevant authorities and institutions was facilitated.
