Founded in 1999 to address the persistent achievement gap in Washtenaw County, Michigan, The Family Learning Institute (FLI) provides free, one-on-one literacy and math tutoring to elementary students from low-income families. We serve up to 100 students per year utilizing a comparable number of community volunteer one-on-one 'coaches.' Students are pre-tested, provided a customized lesson plan to target their specific learning needs, and develop close, long-term relationships with their coaches, who also serve as academic mentors. Our program produces consistent results, with roughly 80% of students advancing one grade level within an academic year and 35% advancing two or more grade levels -- kids who were on a path to falling farther and farther behind. FLI turns failure into success and helps kids develop the skills they need to build the lives they dream.
