Human Resources Officer at Bosman Adama (Pty) Ltd - Wellington, Western Cape, South Africa
The vine nursery nestles against the slopes of Groenberg, Wellington, in the Western Cape, where healthy vines flourish thanks to the clean mountain water from the Kromme River. The young plants are tended with expertise and precision to ensure the highest quality vines.Bosman Adama was born when Petrus Bosman senior sold his surplus vines for the first time in 1947. High-quality plant material was rare in those days, and it was his lifelong dream that every vine sold on his farm would have a respected pedigree.PRODUCT OVERVIEWAt Bosman Adama we believe that a successful vine depends on the best plant material available. Every year we graft more than eight million vines – and that makes Bosman Adama the biggest vine nursery in Africa. We grow all Vitis species:Wine grapesTable grapesRaisin grapesAt Bosman Adama we graft all possible combinations of vines.More cultivars and clones are developed every year. The result is a large range of stocks from which clients can choose. Bosman Adama is licensed to graft newly developed cultivars.Currently more than 350 different combinations are grafted every season. Clients choose the rootstocks that best suit their soil types and growing requirements.StocksIn order to ensure that the vine combinations required by clients are available, stocks have to be ordered in May of the preceding year. Because there has been a higher than normal grafting result, there are vines available even if you have not placed an order.PLANT IMPROVEMENTIn order to ensure access to optimal levels of plant material of high phytosanitary status for Bosman Adama and its clients, ownership of Ernita PIO was taken over in 2014, including the gene pool of clones that this PIO brought with it. Our specialist team in charge of the plant improvement unit has been building up experience in this discipline since as long ago as 1975. Since then the functions of plant improvement have expanded to include table and dried grapes, as well as the importation of new grape cultivars.Bosman Adama's plant improvement unit is part of the South African Plant Improvement Scheme (Plant SA), which is in overall charge of the various schemes that together monitor and control the quality of plant material in the South African grapevine industry. The plant improvement unit offers the following functions and services:Assistance with the importation and quarantine of new plant material (clones)Testing, multiplication and evaluation of new plant material by heat therapy and in vitro for the virus cleansing of plant material (where applicable)Maintenance and conservation of the gene pool. The establishment of nucleus and soil improvement units, after which they are multiplied in a foundation nursery as required for the establishment of mother units.Providing an inspection service with our own inspectors in order to deliver the quality of plant material laid down by the national schemes.MULTIPLE-OWNERSHIPIn a groundbreaking joint undertaking, Bosman Adama and its partner, the Adama Workers Trust, have concluded the biggest Black Economic Empowerment agreement in the wine industry to date.In all 430 ha of outstanding farming land has been transferred to Adama Apolo Holdings, which is 100% owned by qualifying workers from the farm.
