At the American Amputee Society we support and empower persons with amputation, limb difference, or other disabilities through community, education, and activity. We aim to connect individuals who have shared similar experiences to help navigate life's new challenges ahead. We are an all-inclusive organization advocating community and sense of family. Meaning we encourage family members, friends, and the general public to come participate in our events! Our aim is to increase awareness and sense of community, unity, by doing this. Our mission is simple – to create a network, sharing highs and lows, linking families together and building the foundation to establish programs and events that were not available to Founder Jeff R. Bourns growing up, but are critical in development. Through Adaptive Sports individuals with disabilities gain more confidence, physical health and well being, and social awareness while participating in a shared experience with other community members. By creating relationships with individuals who have shared experiences, we believe this lowers depression and anxiety, treats PTS, and most important empowerment and belief in one's self! Founded, formed, and organized in the fourth largest city and by large the medical capital of the United States, we began our journey April 2013 as the Houston Amputee Society. After experiencing rapid growth in our first year our organization amended our name and is sharing our community nationally as the American Amputee Society. The American Amputee Society was Founded Spring of 2013 by Jeff R. Bourns. Jeff has been an amputee for over 30 years. His leg was amputated months after birth due to a congenital birth defect.- missing tibia bone. From life experience Bourns learned that having a network of like-bodied individuals sharing experiences was essential in learning to deal with life's challenges. We will always ensure our members access to unbiased information and resources.
