Starting as a small one-man store on Broadway & 26th Street, Mortimer Levitt founded The Custom Shop in 1937. The first 5 stores were all located in New York City.Mortimer expanded The Custom Shop. Along with the famous red and white awning that still is a staple of The Custom Shop logo, each of the stores had imitation torch lamps that burned yellow.
