Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. According to the Institute of Medicine, 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point in their life. The onset of seizures can occur without warning and for a variety of reasons including: head injury, infection, brain tumor and even heredity.Major medical advances have been made in the last century that help to control or even eliminate seizures; however for almost 50% of the people with epilepsy, seizure freedom has not been attained. Seizures happen at unpredictable times and can cause problems at home, school and the workplace. The Epilepsy Alliance Ohio has been responding to the needs of the person with epilepsy, their families and the community since 1953.
