director of communications at HENRYS HOME HORSE AND HUMAN SANCTUARY - THE WOODLANDS, TX, US
Henry's Home is an all-volunteer 501c3 that takes in rescued and surrendered horses, and other farm animals, and gives them a forever home and meaningful work in our equine growth and learning programs. This nonprofit is supported by personal and corporate donations and grants, other nonprofits, and all the hard work of our volunteers. Folks that have no veteran or first responder family members are welcome to join our care, training and riding lessons at a low cost. Only our volunteers are welcome to these lessons. This is an adult organization. Kids are accepted on a case by case basis depending on their ability to add to the feeling of sanctuary, and not detract from it, with their parents being 100% responsible for their supervision and safety. Our HHELP [Horses & Heroes Equine Learning Program] program offers veterans and first responders, and their families, the opportunity to take horse care, training and riding lessons, at no cost to them, as they volunteer. If you work for a company that would like to bring a team out for a volunteer/work day, we would love to have them come out and work on a project. If you work for a company that would like to hire us for a team-building day with our herd and professionals, wonderful. Equine growth and learning events, where the horses are the instructors and the professional facilitators offer explanations and provide guidance, are designed to develop problem-solving skills that require individuals to work as a team for positive results. These events are becoming popular as companies realize that we all learn much better in a hands-on situation versus being lectured. You can't make a thousand pound animal do anything it does not want to do. Leadership, cooperation, communication, energy and emotion control, and body language are all taught skills, and our horses are incredible instructors. Everyone has a blast while they learn. In fact it doesn't feel like learning until you start to put it into action.
