Joseph L. Frey, Sr. and son, David L. Frey, founded Master Mudjackers in the fall of 1985with the development of a new mudjacking (concrete leveling) system. Mudjacking techniques originated before the 1900's with virtually no improvements after the 1940's. Few were aware of mudjacking's potential until Joe designed his own innovative mudjacking system. In its simplest form, mudjacking combines pumping a mixture of pulverized topsoil and Portland cement under a concrete slab. Lifting with this wet mixture gave "mudjacking" its unique name. Joe's system was the first to control the pumped material at the repair site, enabling Master Mudjackers to be the only Kansas City company to offer safe and clean lifting from inside a settled structure. Started from Joe's Overland Park, Kansas home, Master Mudjackers quickly grew to handle 50% of this type of work in the greater Kansas City area. Master Mudjackers moved to 12714 Second Street, Grandview, Missouri, in November 1987. Utilizing helical piering David established Pier Masters in 1991 later diversifying to a large range of foundation repair products. In early November 1992, the companies relocated to their newly completed 10,000 square foot building at 13501 Arrington Road, Grandview, Missouri. Later that same month, Master Mudjackers, Inc. and Pier Masters became Kansas City Master Companies, Inc. By year-end, they were the largest combined services contractor in their field in Kansas City with over $1 million in sales.
