Government

The City of Goldsboro employs over 525 full-time and part-time personnel and provides a range of services to over 35,197 citizens. The City of Goldsboro takes great pride in providing quality and efficient services to the public.Nestled in the heart of eastern North Carolina, between Raleigh and the coast, Goldsboro is the home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, home of the 4th Fighter Wing and the 916th Refueling Wing. We are a destination rich in cultural and heritage roots, which captivates visitors and residents alike. Our city is rich in history, laden with stories of Tuscarora Indians, steamboats, Revolutionary skirmishes, and Civil War battles. The world's longest railroad once ran through our county. Goldsboro was an important railroad junction during the Civil War. Confederate troops were stationed here to guard the city and report for duty by rail. These trail sites included Foster's Raid, Battle of Goldsborough Bridge and Battle of Whitehall. In 1874, the City of Goldsboro purchased land to be used as an African American cemetery. This area, known as Elmwood Cemetery, is home to the grave of Marine PFC. Dan Bullock. Bullock is believed to be the youngest serviceman killed in action during the Vietnam War. Downtown Goldsboro is proud to be one of the oldest Main Street communities in the state of North Carolina. As a nationally accredited Main Street™ Community program, the City's Downtown Development department and their private partner, the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation, is recognized as a leading program among the national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. All Main Street™ America Accredited programs meet a set of National Accreditation Standards of Performance as outlined by the National Main Street™ Center.
