Membertou is an urban Mi'kmaw community surrounded by 100,000 people in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Membertou has close to 1,500 members and belongs to the greater tribal group of the Mi'kmaw Nation. It is one of five Mi'kmaw communities within the tribal district of Unama'ki (Cape Breton). In December of 2001, Membertou became the first Indigenous Government in Canada to achieve ISO 9001 certification.
