Based in New York City, Coil + Drift is the design studio of modern dancer-turned-designer John Sorensen-Jolink. The studio creates luxurious American-made furniture and lighting using brass, marble, resin, and wood, that is designed using the unique spacial awareness of a dancer and choreographer. The outcome is a collection that feels vividly three-dimensional, material forward, and rich with form and texture. Coil + Drift made its debut at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), where it received the prestigious ICFF Editors' Award for Best New Exhibitor and was named one of five Honorees for the inaugural NYCxDESIGN Award for Emerging Talent. Architectural Digest called Coil + Drift's 2017 presentation "light, airy...with no shortage of the fine craftsmanship for which his Coil + Drift has become known. It's a welcome jolt of texture after the pared-back, nouveau midcentury looks that have dominated fairs of late." Coil + Drift has recently been featured in T Magazine, Wallpaper*, Design Milk, and AD France. Coil + Drift was on the 2018 AMERICAN DESIGN HOT LIST by Sight Unseen.
