The Waterhen Lake First Nation (WLFN) is a signatory to Treaty 6 signed on November 8, 1921. WLFN is a cree community on the shore of Waterhen Lake .WLFN is located on the east boundary of the Meadow Lake Provincial Park and 80 kilometres north of Meadow Lake. Waterhen Forestry Products Inc. supplies wood to Mistik Management and has contracts to supply logs to the NorSask and Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Ltd located 9.6 kilometres east of Meadow Lake. WLFN has invested in and supplies logs to two member-owned sawmills. WLFN purchased a trucking business recently to accommodate the resurgence of forestry. Agriculture opportunities have been in the area of bison, local cattle ranchers, and horse ownership for recreation, and 5 local wild-rice operations that support individual economic growth. The community capitalizes on the tourism industry through their investment in M & N Resort located on the south side of Waterhen Lake. The resort has the modern conveniences necessary to attract tourists from all over the world. Many band members are involved in ventures in the trucking and forestry industries. There is seasonal employment in tourism and fire suppression. The WLFN continue to seek initiatives to turn tourism and forestry opportunities into realities.WLFN has a total registered membership of 1,958 with 883 members residing on-reserve and 1075 members residing at locations off-reserve as of December 2014.
