On December 1, 2010, 3M, a Fortune 100 company, acquired 100% of the issued shares of Cogent, Inc., which became a 3M wholly-owned subsidiary. On May 1, 2017, Gemalto N.V., a public company incorporated in the Netherlands, acquired 3M's Identity Management business, including 3M Cogent, 3M Document Readers and 3M Secure Materials businesses. Gemalto Cogent is now part of the Government Business Unit, which serves more than 100 customers worldwide in programs providing national identity and resident permits, electronic passports, healthcare, tachograph, driver's license/vehicle registration, and border and visa management.
