Empowering people. Breaking the cycle of poverty. One Life at a Time. One Life at a Time is a nonprofit organization which provides training and job market-orientation education to future and returned missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints so that they may become self-sufficient. They do so by acquiring better job skills and accessing higher education, thus allowing students to break the cycle of poverty and increase their capacity to serve as leaders in their wards, stakes and communities in Central America. We exist to change lives 'One Life at a Time'. We accomplish this by providing educational training, placement into jobs or further education, temporal preparation for departing missionaries and creating a setting for religious sociality. After acceptance, students provide service to the community in exchange for education at our schools. These services performed are in alliance with other schools, orphanages, hospitals and communities — this way education is earned and not just given as a handout. Students learn English, basic computer skills, life skills and choose from one of the following electives: accounting/finance, graphic design or creating enterprise. Pre-missionaries are able to provide the same community service and earn dental and medical work along with necessary items such as shoes, clothing and luggage. Education opens up opportunities for participants to become self-sufficient by acquiring better job skills and accessing higher education, thus allowing students to break the cycle of poverty and increase their capacity to serve as leaders in their wards, stakes and communities across the world.
