In May 2017, UCLA was awarded a contract from the CA Department of Health Care Services to serve as Lead Entity for a Los Angeles-based Local Dental Pilot Project (LDPP) as part of the state's Dental Transformation Initiative (DTI). The DTI represents a critical mechanism within California's Medi-Cal 2020 demonstration to improve dental health for Medi-Cal children by focusing on high-value care, improved access, and utilization of performance measures to drive delivery system reform.Operating under the program name "More LA Smiles," the UCLA Dental Transformation Initiative involves collaboration among a consortium of key Los Angeles stakeholders. The consortium includes Medi-Cal and Denti-Cal health plans, dental and medical professional provider organizations, and community-based organizations dedicated to improving oral health services for 500,000 Los Angeles County children with Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal coverage through participation in this UCLA-led initiative. This transformative work is being accomplished via multiple strategies – including practice-level and system-level improvements, professional education programs, enabling information technology solutions, and innovative performance measurement – with support from a group of local and national subcontractors.
