Deputy Director, Community Empowerment Specialist at Horton's Kids - Washington, DC, US
At Horton's Kids, we believe that every child, regardless of circumstance, has the inherent ability to succeed.Horton's Kids is a community-based social change organization that supports children in grades K-12 living in one of the most violent and under-resourced communities in Southeast Washington, D.C., called Wellington Park. Our Community Resource Center—the main hub of our organization— is located just steps from where the children live, and as such we've become a consistent and trusted extension of the families we serve. In our nearly 30-year history, we've shown enormous outcomes for hundreds of young people. The supports we offer are centered on three pillars: academics, health and basic needs, and youth development and enrichment. Our Community Resource Center – the main hub of our organization – is located just steps from where the children live and as such, we've become a consistent and trusted extension of the families we serve. As a result of our robust one-on-one tutoring and mentoring programs, plus Homework Help and other offerings at the Community Resource Center, the high school graduation rate for a Horton's Kid participant is nearly twice the neighborhood average. Enrichment and character building activities expand a child's horizon, and the health & basic needs supports we offer help kids just be kids. Our volunteer network is more than 500 strong.
