The Department of Laboratory Medicine was established in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington in July 1969 to integrate the clinical laboratories at the University Hospital (now University of Washington Medical Center) and Harborview Medical Center. The department now employs 800 people who work at University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and many other clinical and research facilities in the area. The primary purpose of the Department of Laboratory Medicine is to serve as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care and for educational programs in Laboratory Medicine.
