Thaqafat Association is a Moroccan NGO dedicated to fostering cross-cultural respect and appreciation both within Morocco and internationally. Providing opportunities for people of various backgrounds to exchange their perspectives and projects in mutual respect is at the core of Thaqafat's philosophy. Thaqafat welcomes volunteers from around the world, guiding them through their arrival and placement in Morocco. Volunteers engage in social work, organized by either Thaqafat directly or by a local partner NGO. This work can range from English and French education, to computer science training; from environmental issues, to women's rights and social welfare. While in Morocco, volunteers are encouraged to fully immerse themselves in daily life, and are placed in homestays arranged by Thaqafat. Additionally, they have the opportunity to take language courses. Additionally, Thaqafat coordinates local programs including a children's summer camp, and trainings for Moroccan graduates in the fields of intercultural learning and language instruction for non-native speakers. In order to be up-to-date with educational methods used in different parts of the world in the fields of Human Rights education, youth development and intercultural learning, Thaqafat members participate in regular training sessions both in Morocco and abroad. In cooperation with local partner, the Center for Cross Cultural Learning, Thaqafat organizes a variety of community activities to promote cross-cultural dialogue. The hope is that these activities will help reduce the misunderstandings between the diverse people of Morocco and create an environment of sharing and learning among Moroccans and international visitors. Additionally, since 2002 Thaqafat has worked with Experiment in International Living (EIL) in Morocco and in May of 2007 was designated a full member. The High School Summer Abroad program for the American branch of EIL is planned and hosted by Thaqafat Association each year.
