Dirtrider at IVCSD's Isla Vista Compost Collective - Goleta, California, United States
The Ocean Friendly Gardens Committee of Isla Vista Surfrider founded the Isla Vista Compost Collective in the Fall of 2017, with a goal of enabling more residents in Isla Vista to compost, while educating them on how to compost at the same time. In Spring 2018, IVCC received funding through the Coastal Fund which has allowed the program to expand. In Fall of 2019, IVCC expanded to service 96 households. In Winter 2020, IVCC received funding from IVCRC, allowing IVCSD to officially absorbed IVCC in order to continue its composting services.Since the beginning of Summer 2020, IVCC has serviced 96 households and composted an average of 781 pounds of food waste per week. In total, IVCC has diverted over 15 tons of food waste from landfills since 2017, which is equivalent to preventing over 13 tons of CO2e (CO2 equivalent) from being released from the atmosphere.
