The City of Oshkosh is located in the heart of the Fox River Valley on the west shore of Lake Winnebago. Oshkosh was first incorporated in 1853 and is a community of approximately 65,000 residents. It encompasses an area of approximately 24 square miles. The City of Oshkosh has many assets, which include retail, manufacturing and educational facilities. The Outlet Shoppes at Oshkosh, Oshkosh Corporation, Bemis Corporation, Oshkosh B'Gosh, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and a wide range of recreational opportunities, help to make Oshkosh a progressive and thriving community.Oshkosh is the home of the world renowned Experimental Aircraft Association, which attracts over 800,000 people from around the world to its annual air show.In addition, Oshkosh boasts a new hospital, a new YMCA with an indoor soccer and hockey rink, Country U.S.A, Sawdust Days, the Miss Wisconsin Pageant, and Waterfest. The Fox River Valley and the City of Oshkosh are frequently listed in many national publications as one of the safest and best places to live.Historic OshkoshSince its settlement in the mid-1830's, Oshkosh has grown from a sleepy country village to what it is today. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Oshkosh was second only to Milwaukee in population in the state. It was the largest city in the Fox River Valley. The Inland Lakes Yachting Association held its annual regatta at the Oshkosh Yacht Club on Lake Winnebago and, following its construction in 1883, the Grand Opera House was visited by many of the biggest stars in the theater, vaudeville and lecture circuits, making Oshkosh the cultural center of the Fox Valley. From a village built upon the lumber industry to the present day city based upon manufacturing and retail, the City of Oshkosh has a great history.
