Community Children's Center, Inc. (CCC) has over 50 years experience in delivering high-quality early education to children experiencing poverty and trauma in Lawrence and Douglas County, Kansas. Our mission is to bring about a greater degree of social-emotional competence and school readiness for young children and their families experiencing economic, educational and social challenges. CCC was founded in 1965 through the work of Plymouth Congregational Church's Social Action Committee to provide child care services to low-income families. In 1966, CCC received federal funding to operate one of the first Head Start programs in the country. That program has been housed at Plymouth Church since that time and now serves 60 preschool-aged children. Its high quality earned a visit from President Barack Obama in 2015.Over its 53-year history, CCC has operated, housed and overseen a number of programs for young children, including the Ballard Center, Douglas County Child Development Association (now Positive Bright Start), Big Brother (now Big Brothers and Sisters), Summer Youth Program and the Children's Hour. Since 2015, CCC has been a member of the Douglas County Early Childhood Trauma Collaborative, which has raised over $100,000 to develop trauma-informed services in our early childhood community. We have implemented the Trauma Smart model (http://traumasmart.org/) in four of our largest preschools, serving over 600 children, and recently received United Way funding to expand Trauma Smart to child care centers and agencies.
