Sustainable Chesapeake's mission is to identify and demonstrate innovative approaches to restoring the Chesapeake Bay that promote prosperity for farms, business, and communities in the region.Using a collaborative approach, we tackle some of the most difficult pollution problems – nonpoint source runoff from farms and cities – and show how reducing pollution to the Chesapeake Bay can also make economic sense. Our projects include the Farm Manure to Energy Initiative, a watershed-wide effort to identify manure to energy technologies that can help farmers in high-density animal agriculture regions of the Chesapeake generate new revenue sources by concentrating excess nutrients and selling them to nutrient-deficient regions where farmers rely primarily on commercial phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Sustainable Chesapeake is also in the process of developing projects that reduce stormwater pollution, provide employment and job training for youth, and support education outcomes in highly urbanized communities.
