Amistad is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit agency providing a variety of programs including medical transportation, guardianship services, family counseling, veteran services, money management, and healthcare guidance to the elderly and to residents with disabilities in West Texas.Amistad was founded in 1976 as an initiative under the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), spearheaded by Ms. Lucy G. Acosta and a core group of volunteers. The initial goal of the agency was to provide transportation and social services to elderly residents and persons with disabilities. Today, Amistad serves as the only nonprofit Managed Transportation Organization (MTO) for 23 Far West Texas counties.
