Hungary's national museum of decorative arts and design, is one of the oldest museums of applied arts in Europe.Following the establishment of similar museums in London, Vienna and Berlin, and upon realizing the importance of handicrafts and industrial design, the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest was founded by the Hungarian Parliament in 1872.The Museum's initial aim was to create an art collection that would promote the development of Hungarian craft industries and raise the standard of public taste; besides being a museum it was to accommodate a library and a school. With its rich and wide-ranging collection, the Museum is a hub for research, digitization and new approaches in museum education and visitor management. Our permanent and temporary exhibitions present artworks from historic times to contemporary design, from Hungary and abroad. The newest member to the museum's family is the Contemporary Design Collection (founded in 2015). Collection management and research regarding contemporary art and design resonate with the Museum's original philosophy: connection to the present times and following current trends and innovations.
