Jackson Street is a heritage icon at the hub of Petone. It combines an eclectic mix of old buildings with fantastic cafés, boutique shopping together with beauty and commercial services. The retail strip boasts a huge variety of specialty shops, cafés, bars and restaurants that supply a wide range of ethnic foods, great coffee and goods not available anywhere else. The Jackson Street Programme is an incorporated society set up in 1993. It promotes the street as a destination for shopping, eating out, professional services, commercial services and socialising. It also organises promotional and community events. Its main source of funds is a targeted rate levied by the Hutt City Council on commercial ratepayers in the street. Every three years these businesses are polled to see whether they still support the rate. Funds also come from charitable donations and subscriptions paid by supporters and associate members.Three part-time staff run the activities of the Jackson Street Programme (JSP) from its office in the Historic Police Station, 274b Jackson Street, Petone. The board of the JSP is elected at an annual general meeting held each spring.
