Our mission is to offer comfort and support to people with illness and disability, to new mothers and families, and to advocate for access to quality health care for all. We do this through our three programs: Patient Pals & Family Friends is a peer-support program to help people with illness and/or disability, who feel isolated and depressed. Our trained volunteers become friend and advocate to people who often have no other source of personal support. Some "Pals" move on within a few weeks; others stay for months, grateful for support that is separate from government services. True Stories tells the stories of people caught in a system that doesn't meet their needs and educates people about the Affordable Care Act. Start from Seed, offers prenatal, birth and postnatal support to first-time mothers who otherwise would not have the resources to have a doula, or coach. Women are referred to the program by agencies of Buncombe County government and programs within Mission Hospital, and our doulas all are volunteers.
