Almond Acres Charter Academy has implemented a model of learning and teaching into the curriculum and instruction of the entire school by using the concepts in the Formation of Learning (FOL) Framework. The framework guides teachers when designing lessons, delivering instruction, and determining assessment practices. It also allows teachers to focus on diverse learning styles and intelligences while working toward the creative application of knowledge and reasoning skills.Integration of SubjectsIntegration of subjects allows students to make real-world connections and foster problem solving. Subject integration strengthens skills that students encounter in one content area but also practice in another and promotes mastery of skills. It is also a more authentic way of learning because it reflects real experiences in the world. Teachers are encouraged to create unique learning experiences as part of the curriculum using the Common Core Curriculum Maps as a guide for standards-based thematic teaching that peaks student interest. Teaching in this way provides more adequate coverage of curriculum, use of natural learning, teaching skills in meaningful contexts, increased flexibility, implementation of technology, and an organized planning tool. Small SchoolThe small, safe, and personalized environment promotes high expectations and support for all students. Small class sizes (Grades K-3: 24 students, Grades 4-5: 30 students, Grades 6-8: 32 students) enable a higher ratio of teacher to student interaction, which, coupled with family and community involvement, allows teachers to work with small groups and individuals to differentiate instruction and meet students' needs. Community and Parent InvolvementThe partnership between families, school, and community is essential to the implementation of the School. It is AACA's belief that education is a cooperative process involving the best efforts of students, parents/guardians, school staff, and the community. AACA believes that parents/guardians who are actively involved in their child's education enhance the likelihood that they will succeed in school, particularly at the elementary school level. Research shows that parent involvement in a child's education is a better indicator of student success than parent education or level of income.Family participation hours are essential to the success of the School, and help foster valuable relationships with students and staff. As such, parents/guardians as asked to fulfill this commitment each school year. Families support the school by assisting in the classroom, chaperoning field trips, organizing fundraisers, participating in the governance of the school, and many other activities. Shared StartThe school community, which includes students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff members, gather each morning for a shared start of the day. During this time, the students say the Pledge of Allegiance and listen to any important announcements or school business that needs to be communicated. Additionally, each day of the week has a different focus including introducing and reinforcing Productive Habits of Mind and Character Traits through the Character Counts Program, acknowledging and celebrating birthdays, sharing what students and staff are thankful for, and telling jokes. The school-wide shared start sets the tone for the school day and is an important component that helps further develop the unique climate and culture of AACA.
