Process Development Technologist at Viride SuStra BV - Halsteren, North Brabant, Netherlands
Viride SuStra B.V. is a start-up founded in 2016 with the mission of developing new technologies that contribute to a transition to a bio-based economy. We aim to make lignocellulosic material available for the industry in constant quality at the lowest cost. We call this "The Green Pellet" and our objective is to create a true commodity as feedstock for the industry. In 2017, Viride SuStra B.V. started the development of an innovative process for the conversion of several biomasses into logistically attractive "Green Pellets" that serve as a raw material for the industry in the production of bio-ethanol and bio-chemicals. Thanks to the technology (patent pending), the Green Pellets are denser, stronger, present higher moisture resistance, and lower dust content than other biomass pellets. The improved features of the Green Pellets ensure an easier handling and a more cost-effective transportation. On top of that, the Green Pellets are the only biomass pellets that can be directly converted to fermentable sugars. The produced sugars have been successfully tested in the production of ethanol and itaconic acid at lab scale. By the end of 2018 Viride SuStra B.V. aims to adapt the technology to four different biomasses. Viride SuStra B.V. has exciting plans ahead. Scaling up of the technology and evaluation of other applications of the green pellets, for example production of energy and bio-composites, are in the planning of the next years. Further process development and optimization to take full advantage of the potential for cost savings in the value chain are also part of the tasks. In the long term, the vision of Viride SuStra B.V. is to develop the Green Pellets to a commodity platform to which suppliers deliver and consumers take off. With this platform, Viride wants to create a global market (supply and demand) that is reliable and efficient both for the industry and for the rural areas. Making an innovative contribution to a sustainable world!
