Prof. Suniti Solomon, MD, Founder-Director of the YR Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education (YRG CARE) and her team documented the first evidence of HIV infection in India in 1986, when she was a Professor of Microbiology at Madras Medical College. She subsequently established the institution, which currently provides medical and psycho-social care for more than 20,000 persons with HIV disease and conducting several international clinical trials and educational/training programmes.
