1 in 20 Australian children will experience the death of a parent before the age of 18. Prior to reaching adulthood, many other children will face the loss of another significant loved one including a sibling, other close family member or friend. To endure one of life's most painful experiences as a child or young person has a profound and life-long impact. By providing a safe and nurturing space through the NCCG's individual and group counselling programs, bereaved children and their families learn to live with their grief, empowering them to live their best life possible.Even though mental health has in recent years become a topical issue nationally, Childhood Grief is often misdiagnosed, misunderstood or incorrectly managed. Children and young people are at risk of long term detrimental effects on their overall wellbeing, without the appropriate support either at home and in their community, or if needed in a professional capacity. It is therefore so very important that services like the NCCG exist to not only support bereaved children and their families to learn to live with their grief, empowering them to live their best life possible, but to also educate as many as possible across Australia on how to be with bereaved people. Grief is a universal and devastating issue and yet for many of us sadly we remain unsure in what is helpful when supporting bereaved people. This specialist service, founded in 1994 by Mal McKissock OAM and Dianne McKissock OAM, internationally recognised experts in the field of child bereavement and grief counselling, is free and unlimited for children aged 3 to 18 years. The NCCG operates from their bereavement care centre, 'A Friend's Place' in Sydney. Services are provided in person and online. A range of individual and group counselling programs for bereaved children and families is available, as well as education training courses for professionals working with bereaved adults and children.
