Doris Magazine was born out of a student-lead journalism initiative to increase global awareness of the significance of marine ecosystems and the communities that they influence.The importance of the world's oceans, their processes, and the creatures that call them home is unparalleled. Ocean systems produce over half of the oxygen in the air we breathe, absorb fifty times more carbon dioxide than the atmosphere, regulate climate and weather patterns, facilitate world trade and transportation, create immense economic benefits and countless employment opportunities, and are critical sources of food and medicine. Not to mention, the ocean plays a central role in culturally important narratives echoed within and between communities all over the globe. Without a critical understanding of the ocean and the role it plays in the lives of those in even the world's most land-locked communities, the general public is ill-equipped to make personal, social, and political decisions that support a sustainable and just future.The goal of Doris is to demonstrate through diligent research, collaboration, and transparency that stories about the environment do not exist in a vacuum, and are instead closely connected to human society.The stories shaped and shared through the platform of Doris Magazine aim to contribute to a local and global culture that encourages (a) cooperation (b) democratic dialogue, (c) non-violence, (d) equality and equity, (e) ecological sustainability (f) transparency, (g) humility and respect, (h) and a sustainable relationship between humans and the natural world
