SMART Team, a division of the Justice Resource Institute, provides positive transitions for court-involved, homeless, and traumatized youth, 13-24 years old. They are usually of a low income background and have unstable housing; they are frequently gang-involved, and typically perpetrators of crime and or victims of community violence; they come from economically depressed neighborhoods. They experience the highest levels of exposure, victimization and perpetration of violence. These events trigger young people to engage in reactive behavior, such as weapons carrying, aggression, gang affiliation and other risk taking behavior that can increase their vulnerability.
