Sparta became incorporated in 1852 and is the county seat of Monroe County, nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of western Wisconsin along the La Crosse River. The population was 9,522 at the 2010 census. The city was named after ancient Greek city-state of Sparta.Sparta is the home and international headquarters of several businesses including Century Foods International, Northern Engraving Corporation, Spartek, Mathews Incorporation, F.A.S.T. Sparta's claim as the "Bicycling Capital of America" is based upon the first rail bed in Wisconsin to be converted to bike trails between Sparta and Elroy.Annual Events:Butterfest is an annual event in the city.
