For over 140 years, the Arkansas Medical Society has served the physicians and patients of Arkansas as an advocate, support system and source for health care news and resources. Most recently, physician leaders and staff have worked together to support private health insurance coverage for working families earning below 138% of the federal poverty level; advocate for responsible and practical reforms such as patient-centered medical homes and the prescription drug monitoring program; and nationally, and putting an end to the SGR. Other significant advances for Arkansas patients and physicians supported by AMS include establishing a statewide trauma system, passage of the Clean Indoor Air Act, graduated drivers' license and restrictions on cell phone use while driving, funding tobacco prevention and cessation programs, funding cancer research, providing vision screening in schools, requiring health care facilities to provide emergency care to sexual assault victims, providing research funding and insurance coverage for colorectal cancer screening, and protecting an Arkansan's right to choose their physician. The AMS also works diligently to stay up-to-date in all areas of practice management and is always on hand to answer members' questions and make sure they are updated on important health care issues.
