North of South Capital was established in 2004 and is headed by founding partner and Portfolio Manager, Matt Linsey. Prior to establishing North of South, Matt was Head of Emerging Markets at Deutsche Asset Management (2000-2004), an investment manager/strategist at Baring Asset Management (1997–2000) and a portfolio manager at ING Asset Management (1994-1997). On the investment side, Matt is supported by Risk Manager Kamil Dimmich and Senior Investment Advisor Mark Latham. Kamil Dimmich has 12 years' equity and equity derivative experience, including 5 years' investment management experience. Before joining North of South in June 2009, Kamil managed a proprietary book at Dresdner Kleinwort which delivered positive returns in 2008. He also previously co-managed the Odey Latham Fund at Odey Asset Management. Mark Latham has been a senior advisor to the fund since 2005 and runs Commodity Intelligence, a commodity investment consultancy business. Mark previously managed the Odey Latham Fund, and spent four years running Baring Natural Resources Fund. Portfolio construction begins with a macro view, after which long or short investments are identified through fundamental analysis. The manager's investment approach is value-oriented, with an emphasis on strong balance sheets, free cash flow, and dividend yield. Overseeing risk at the portfolio level, the risk manager monitors VAR, liquidity, and gross exposures on a daily basis. In addition, the risk manager manages a separate "hedge book" which aims to protect the fund from large market falls and, for sustained market falls, limit the fund's downside to less than half that of the index.
