The mission of the Greenville Museum of Art is: To Provide and Promote Visual Art through the Collection, Exhibitions, and Education. The Museum was founded in 1939 and is the center of the visual arts in Greenville and Pitt County. The Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums, an honor achieved by only 10% of the museums nationwide. The GMA is currently going through the AAM reaccreditation process. (Reaccreditation takes place every 10 years.) The Museum is open six days a week, is free of charge and handicapped accessible. Museum policy is formulated by the Board of Trustee consisting of 20 members. Trustees are elected by the Museum membership and serve three year terms; Trustees can serve no more than two consecutive three year terms.
