As a board certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner since 1998 I have gained invaluable knowledge and experience in not only the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, but also how to traverse the complicated healthcare system. I've been blessed with a wealth of experience in multiple specialties including medical & surgical intensive care, pain management, neurosurgery, radiation oncology and geriatrics, in both the hospital and skilled nursing/nursing home environment.However, I quickly morphed from being a healthcare provider to a patient advocate when 2 of my own family members required emergency surgery within 4 weeks of each other. I was now on the other side of the bed - communicating with the medical teams as an overwhelmed family member, working to keep my loved one safe while in the hospital, advocating and speaking up for them when needed, coordinating discharge and rehabilitation plans, keeping all the bills and insurance invoices straight and even disputing bills when I found errors/discrepancies.I quickly realized how overwhelming, frightening and exhausting it can be trying to care for and advocate for a sick loved one.
