Project Youth Court, Inc. is a New Haven-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Connecticut that manages the state's first and only youth court. With a national model that has been tailored to New Haven, Project Youth Court takes trained high-school volunteers into a federal courtroom to serve as attorneys and jurors using principles of restorative justice to hear diverted misdemeanor cases.By participating in Youth Court, young people have the unique opportunity to actively engage in the justice system and shape their shared community values. Teenagers who might otherwise face stiff penalties for misdemeanor offenses — or escape consequences altogether — are given a second chance and a way to repair the harm their actions may have caused. If they successfully complete the terms of their restorative contract, they can avoid a criminal record. All participants, including our volunteers, leave with a stronger sense of civic engagement and a more positive view of the law.
