The Magistrates' Court of Victoria is the first level in the Victorian court system. The Court has summary jurisdiction to hear and determine criminal, civil and intervention order cases. The criminal jurisdiction hears and determines all summary offences and some indictable offences. The civil jurisdiction can determine most disputes over money or property up to the value of $100 000, however in certain circumstances the Court can hear cases with an unlimited value. The court has jurisdiction to make intervention orders to protect people who have experienced violent, threatening or abusive behaviour.
