Rapid Reviews: COVID-19 is an open-access overlay journal that accelerates peer review of COVID-19-related research preprints to advance new and important findings, and prevent the dissemination of false or misleading scientific news. The editors, led by Professor Stefano Bertozzi and based at UC Berkeley, approach COVID-19 and its wide-ranging effects from a multidisciplinary and global perspective, reviewing papers from the fields of medicine; public health; the physical, biological, and chemical sciences; engineering; social sciences and the humanities. RR:C19 has coalesced a student-powered network of screeners from academic networks around the world to identify important preprints that are posted across preprint servers such as medRxiv, bioRxiv, SSRN, and other repositories of articles that have yet to be peer reviewed. We leverage machine learning tools developed by COVIDScholar to support this process. The most important question we ask of reviewers is whether a paper's main claims are reliable and trustworthy. We hope that the transparent review on the range of evidence and ideas presented or asserted by the main claims of each preprint can be used to further our knowledge in fighting COVID-19, providing a vital outlet for research communications produced in the wake of the pandemic.
